A novice player from the College of Teacher Education (CTE) Nobles, secured the gold medal in the women’s discus throw with an impressive distance at the PIT Oval Ground during Siglakas 2023.
Bea Mae Calixtro of CTE Nobles unveiled her hidden talent during her first attempt, reaching 42 feet and 8 meters, outshining competitors from various delegations.
Despite a momentary setback in her second attempt, where she scored 36 feet and 11 meters, Maricel Villarmino, another CTE Nobles player, seized the chance and achieved 41 feet and 9 meters.
The thrilling competition extended to the final trial, where Villarmino’s 42 feet and 6 meters edged ahead of Calixtro’s 37 feet and 3 meters.
However, Calixtro’s initial distance of 42 feet and 8 meters ultimately secured the gold, making her the top performer across three trials.
Villarmino settled for the silver medal with her highest mark of 42 feet and 6 meters, while Anthonette Descartin of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Tigers claimed third place with a distance of 40 feet and 10 meters.
In a surprising twist, Calixtro revealed that she had never participated in throwing events in previous SCUAA competitions. ‘‘Knowing that this was my first time joining this game, it was quite impossible for me to envision given the circumstances, but I gave all my best to clinch the top spot,’’ Calixtro on her remarkable victory.
